The article is devoted to the study of theoretical and practical aspects of the application of the statistical method in the study of recidivism. The possibilities and limitations of quantitative and qualitative analysis, including statistical observation, summary and grouping of data, and their subsequent interpretation, are considered. Based on official data from the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia and the Judicial Department of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, the indicators of the state, structure and dynamics of recidivism, as well as the coefficients of post-penitentiary recidivism and the recurrence of probation are analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the problems of incompleteness, inconsistency and terminological discrepancies in the reporting of various departments, the lack of indicators of the intensity of recidivism and insufficient detail of official collections. The necessity of unifying terminology, expanding statistical forms and introducing a unified methodology for calculating the recurrence rate is substantiated, which will improve the accuracy of analytical conclusions and the effectiveness of preventive measures
