The subject of the present article is, firstly, the historical and legal sources, allowing to reconstruct the picture of formation and development of the forest law of Russia in the Middle Ages before the reign of Peter the Great. The initial date for natural reasons will remain open, as the origins of forest laws go back to the period of customary law, the initial period of which is impossible to determine; secondly, the historiography of the problem through the analysis of the works of forest law jurists who illuminated the period under study. The article cites all known sources that can recreate the most complete picture of the normative process of the problem and see the features and regularities of the formation and development of forest law for the period under study. The author emphasizes that in order to achieve objective truth it is necessary to use a variety of sources and methods of related disciplines, and the use of archival sources for this purpose is an indisputable rule. It is also undoubted that the main source for lawyers remains a normative act. However, narrative studies based both on normative acts and on historical facts, examples and phenomena with the authors' inferences and citing analogies with similar legal solutions in the legislation of other countries also contribute to the improvement of domestic legislation
