Abstract
This article examines legal homonymy and polysemy in criminal proceedings. It recommends distinguishing between legal polysemy and homonymy. In the case of polysemy, a term retains its semantic connection, while in polysemy, this connection is lost, resulting in different legal concepts, accidentally or intentionally expressed by the legislator in a single word. Using criminal procedural concepts such as "examination", "explanation", and "interview" as examples, it is concluded that homonymy and polysemy are a necessary measure in legal technique. It is noted that in certain cases, overcoming homonymy and polysemy is not required. The existence of legal polysemy and homonymy in law is inevitable. The artificial creation of dozens of new, highly specialized terms is inappropriate: this would overload the legislation and hinder its comprehension. It is concluded that there is no need to create a completely unique lexicon for each of the dozens and hundreds of legal institutions that regulate various aspects of public life. Using commonly understood terms when drafting regulatory legal acts is essential to ensure the law's connection to everyday language and society as a whole. Using dozens of synonyms for each area would make the law more confusing
