The article is devoted to some features of the subject of crimes in the field of drug trafficking. Their legal nature is revealed, the evolution of the legislative approach to defining the subject of these crimes is traced, the approaches to the concepts of "narcotic drugs" and "psychotropic substances" existing in scientific doctrine are revealed, the legal and practical problems related to the category of "analogues" are analyzed, including issues of their identification and classification as prohibited substances. It is concluded that the emergence of new synthetic substances and their analogues that are not included in the official lists creates serious challenges for law enforcement practice. An accurate and uniform understanding of what is a narcotic drug, psychotropic substance or their analog is becoming a key condition for the effective qualification of crimes, ensuring the principle of legality and countering drug crime
