The article is devoted to the examination of corrective labor as a type of punishment not involving imprisonment. The authors reveal problematic issues and analyze changes in legislation regarding this type of punishment, which, throughout the relatively long history of corrective labor, continue to remain debatable in the doctrine of criminal law. In order to determine conceptual positions, a literature review is provided, summarizing the experience of domestic researchers, reflecting the specifics of the application of corrective labor, its essence as a punishment not involving the isolation of the convicted person from society, as well as problematic areas and unresolved practical issues that require theoretical elaboration. Based on an analysis of judicial practice across different historical periods, it is concluded that despite the very positive, humane essence of this punishment, its share has significantly decreased with the adoption of amendments concerning the types of corrective labor, specifically the category of convicted persons to whom it may be imposed. During the preparation of the work, the authors identified problems related to the implementation of this type of punishment in connection with the amendments to criminal law that came into force on January 20, 2026, for example, the imposition of corrective labor on minors. The reduction in the application of this type of punishment will affect not only adult (over 18) offenders but will also cause serious difficulties in its application to persons who have not reached the age of majority. At the same time, regarding this category of convicted persons, the application of the most humane punishments not involving isolation from society remains one of the key directions of the state's criminal law and penal policy
